Urban3D

A city-wide treasure hunt combining collectible 3D-printed objects with maps, QR codes and online collections.

Urban3D was a city-wide treasure hunt built around locally produced, collectible 3D-printed objects. Players explored mapped locations to find the objects, which they could claim and keep.

Each object carried a unique QR code linking it to a record in the web application. Scanning the code allowed a player to claim it, reveal its digital content and add it to their online collection.

The project involved both the design and production of the physical objects and the software behind the game: mapping locations, handling claims and tracking each player’s collection and progress.

The start of Cartodrop

When other teams expressed interest in running their own games, I developed the tools into Cartodrop. The mapped items, QR codes and progress tracking became the basis for an application supporting multiple organisations and different types of location-based experiences.
